Frequently Asked Questions
1
Why was my fish tagged?
Conventional fish tags are a common tool for scientific researchers and fishery managers. They can be used along with specialized analysis techniques to evaluate overall population status and health, manage harvest rates, and better understand biological information about survival, growth, movement, migration, etc. Your fish could have been tagged by a federal or state management agency, a research institution, a graduate student, or even an interested citizen scientist as part of an established tagging program. Sometimes tags are also used as part of a derby or competition, and your tagged fish might even win you a prize. When you enter your tag number you should be able to learn a bit more about the purpose of the tag, and get contact information to report the tag to tagger and possibly ask them for some more details.
2
Does ReportCatch collect any information about me?
No! ReportCatch simply shows you the information associated with your tag, that was provided to us by the tagger who purchased it. We do not collect or retain any other data. See our privacy policies below for more information.
3
What if I want to tag fish?
Fish tagging can be exciting and rewarding, and we encourage all interested fishers to explore their options. ReportCatch tags can be purchased using the link at the bottom of the page. It is important to know that fish tagging often requires special permits or licenses, and you should contact your local management agency to learn more before buying or using any tags. Fish tags are most often used by professional licensed fishery scientists or trained citizen scientist taggers through an established tagging program, and we encourage you to seek out an existing recreational tagging program to ask how you can join their efforts before buying your own tags.
4
Can any fish tag be looked up on this site?
Only fish tags that are printed with "www.reportcatch.com" can be looked up on this site. Each ReportCatch tag that is produced has a unique ID number associated with this program. If you happen to enter the same ID number from a different program, you will receive the wrong information.
5
Why doesn't my tag ID show any information?
Tag reporting information is entered by the tagger when they purchase the tags, and this information is required for every tag sold, even if the tag is never put on a fish. All program records should remain available indefinitely. If you have entered a tag number that does not return any information, please double check the number and try entering it again. If you continue to experience issues, please head over to www.tags.fish and send us a message to report the issue.
